Gulf of Georgia Cannery

Gulf of Georgia Cannery

Gulf of Georgia Cannery: This Spring-break found us at the waterfront in the village of Steveston, BC.  Steveston is located at the mouth of the Fraser River in the Straight of Georgia an hour south of Vancouver.  Historically, Steveston was home to more than 15 large fish canneries in the early 1900’s.  This image, a restored and maintained cannery building, houses a National Heritage Site for Parks Canada.  The exhibit tells the story of the fishing industry in British Columbia and how more than 10,000 workers toiled in fish processing plants to supply markets around the world with B.C. salmon.  Today, Steveson is safe harbour for the west coast fishing fleet and a place you can purchase fresh seafood directly off the boats.  Next post I will show you some of the equipment used in the processing plants.
