Herring Reduction Plant: Due to over-fishing and reduced demand for canned salmon, many of the canneries added herring reduction process lines in the 1950’s. The plants extracted fish oil and turned the fish waste into animal feed. This image shows the pipes used in the separation process. In spite of the dark industrial nature of the plant, someone took the time to add colour to brighten the work environment. You’re probably sick of cannery photos so this will be my last post on this subject.
